Alongside statutory rights, your employer may have contractual rights, terms or policies to support caregivers in the workplace. You will usually be able to find out if there is extra support for carers by checking your employment contract, or a staff handbook, HR policies of equivalent. It might include (paid or unpaid) carers’ leave and/or carers’ support services.

Colleagues can be supportive, and although you of course don’t need to inform them, it may help to discuss your situation with someone you trust. It may even lead to the setting up of a support group or employee network.

If you are working, you may be looking at options to get support in place for the person you’re caring for at home. Your local authority can conduct an assessment - this would look at the care and support needs of your relative and may result in a care worker, equipment in the home or otherwise. Depending on your income and capital, this may be covered fully or contributed towards by the local council. Or you may look into private care options - your local authority may have a list of private providers in the area that you can view online.
