Disabled Facilities Grant

You may be able to get a grant from your local authority to change your home to be more suited to your child’s needs. This includes if your child is physically disabled, has a learning disability or is autistic.

Changes can include widening doors, installing ramps, improving access to rooms, facilities and your garden and more. It can also include a contribution to moving costs if your current home is deemed unsuitable, even with changes, for your child.

A Disabled Facilities Grant for a child doesn’t depend on their parents’ income and won’t affect any benefits you get.


Who is it for?

• Disabled Facilities Grants are available for homes of disabled children
  
  

• The work must be deemed necessary and appropriate to meet the disabled person’s need by the local authority
  
  

• The work must be reasonable and possible

How to claim?

The owner, tenant or landlord of the property can apply through your local council. The council may then send someone such as an occupational therapist or trained assessor to assess the changes you need.

The council must give you a decision within 6 months.

You need to apply separately for planning permission or building regulations approval that may be required.

The work should be completed within 12 months of the grant being approved.
