Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a monthly payment to support with the extra costs of caring for a child with a long-term health condition or disability.

You may be able to claim this benefit for your child regardless of your income or your savings.

Who is it for?

  • DLA is not means-tested
  • It is available for children aged 3 months to 16 years who need more support with daily tasks and/or mobility than a child of the same age who does not have a disability
  • These difficulties must have been present for at least 3 months and be expected to last for at least 6 months
  • Children living in England, Wales and Northern Island (for children in Scotland, you can apply for Child Disability Payment)

How to claim?

For children living in England and Wales, you can claim by printing off and filling in the DLA claim form here. Alternatively you can call the DLA helpline and ask for a printed form.

For children living in Northern Island, you can claim by printing off and filling in the DLA child claim form here. Your completed forms should be sent to the Disability and Carers Service or handed in at your nearest Jobs and Benefits office. If you require the form in another format you can contact the Disability and Carers Service.
