If you care for someone at least 35 hours a week you may be eligible for Carer’s Allowance. Caring can include washing and cooking support, accompanying them to appointments and helping with daily tasks.

Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits received by the carer and the child.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone caring for a child who gets the middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance or similar
  • You must be caring for them for at least 35 hours per week
  • Your earnings must be £139 or less per week after tax, National Insurance and expenses
  • You don’t have to be related to, or living with, the person you are caring for
  • However, if someone else also cares for the same person, only one of you can claim
  • You don’t get paid extra if you care for more than one person
  • It is available to people living in England, Scotland or Wales
